Brief Project Overview

AdventHealth is a not-for-profit hospital system headquartered in Orlando, FL. They are focused on “whole person health”, meaning that they “serve people’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs — helping them feel whole”.

Seniors approaching the age of 65 need to make a decision when selecting a plan for Medicare. Currently the information on these plans is spread across multiple platforms and can be confusing when looking at part A, B, C, and D of Medicare. Throughout the project we had to understand the different plans of Medicare and create an interactive way to understand the choice seniors need to make.

An unmet need

Through secondary research, we found that seniors approaching the ages of 65 can often be confused between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid to understand which plan best fits their needs. Another common thing we found was that if our users miss their time to sign-up for a plan, they would have to pay a late fee. Through interviews we found that current Medicare mobile apps did not do a sufficient job explaining. We also found our users felt overwhelmed with all the different sources to learn about medicare (misleading advertisements, confusing mobile apps) which worries them about making the right plan decision.

Creating a clear path

Rounds of sketching helped our team narrow to the idea that users need a way to select the areas they need covered by Medicare and the mobile app should come with suggested plans based on those needs. This helps create clear information for seniors approaching the age of 65.

Approaching a path for users

After conducting usability testing with 10 participants ages 52-60 years old, we found that we needed to provide reasoning to users about why they were providing all this information before selecting a plan, we needed a navigation bar to support users through the process, an about page of Advent Health for users, and a detailed profile page to make edits to the initial questions later in the app process.
